Trelson Focus (ChromeOS) is a security client in the form of a browser extension that can be used by students with Chromebooks. When a teacher creates an assignment with this security client, a new dimension of possibilities opens up as the teacher can allow a wide range of digital resources, even those that require the student to be logged into another platform (such as Binogi or Magma Math).
For an assignment with Trelson Focus (ChromeOS), the teacher has the ability to allow specific resources, such as Google Meet, limited access to Google Drive, other Chrome extensions, and various digital learning platforms used by the school. However, note that to use the digital learning platforms, a license from the respective company is required, such as Magma Math.
The student loses their free access to the browser on their Chromebook
When a student on their Chromebook opens an assignment with Trelson Focus (ChromeOS) as the security client, all tabs on the computer are closed. The student thus loses their free access to the browser and can only work with the material that the teacher has approved for the assignment. If the student tries to open, for example, Snapchat on the web or ChatGPT, they will encounter a large red stop sign that cannot be bypassed.
Not just for assignments
It is important to note that an assignment with Trelson Focus (ChromeOS) as the security client does not necessarily have to be an assignment to be submitted. The teacher can create an assignment and then allow students to work in another platform to perform the specified activity, such as watching a video, reading scientific articles, or using materials from for example Magma Math or Binogi.
Note! Please note that Trelson Focus (ChromeOS) is not intended for use in, for example, national exams, where the Kiosk app is the safer option. Trelson Focus (ChromeOS) is designed for instruction, and the Kiosk app is for exams and assessments.
How to use Trelson Focus
1. Create the assignment: Create an assignment with regular settings and choose Trelson Focus (ChromeOS) as the security client.
2. Add resources: Choose the resources you want to use under "Resources". You can find the list of learning platforms under "Add learning materials".
3. Let the student enter the assignment: The student clicks on the links to the allowed resources and can only work with the specified ones. Note that external links do not work unless you have allowed them as resources ("Add website"). This means that if the learning material links to, for example, a Wikipedia article, the external article cannot be opened.
4. When students are done: Students can exit Focus mode at any time by clicking on the red button with an "X". The teacher can monitor students' activities in the log (ensure they are in the locked mode) and support students as needed.
Trelson Focus is continuously evolving, and we are working to develop it to make it as simple and smooth as possible for you to take advantage of the benefits of digitization while still helping students focus on learning.
