At the start of the 2024 school year, we released a calculator that teachers can make available to all or selected students. The calculator is available in three different complexities: basic, advanced, and scientific. It is designed for teachers who do not want to add GeoGebra as a resource to an assignment, but still want to offer students the ability to perform simple calculations.
Make the calculator available to all students in the assignment
- Log in to Trelson and select/create the assignment you want to activate the calculator for.
- Activate and choose calculator under "Accessibility tools" which you find in the assignment settings. If you have already created the assignment, click "All options" to expand the other assignment settings and choose which calculator students should use: basic, advanced, or scientific. Don't forget to click "Save" if you changed the settings in an existing assignment.
- Done! Now students will be able to toggle the calculator open and closed as they please.
Make the calculator available to selected students in the assignment
- Log in to Trelson and select/create the assignment you want to activate the calculator for.
- Once you have added students to the assignment, click on the three dots to the right on the row of the student who should have access to the calculator.
- Click on "Adjustments" and change to the desired calculator under the heading "Calculator".
- Done! Now only the selected student will have access to the calculator during the assignment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I give access to a calculator to a student during an ongoing exam?
Yes, you can. Log in to Trelson as a teacher and assign the student access to the calculator as instructed earlier in the article. Then, ask the student to exit the assignment and log back in. The student will need to enter the PIN code to resume, but once they are back in the assignment, the calculator will be available to them.
How do I give students access to a graphing calculator?
If you need, for example, a graphing calculator or other more advanced calculator functions, go to the "Resources" tab and choose to add GeoGebra to the assignment. You can read more about GeoGebra as a resource in this support article.
What is the difference between the different complexities?
The calculator can be activated in three different complexities: basic, advanced, and scientific. When you add a calculator, you have the option to preview it to ensure it meets the students' needs. Click on the eye icon to the left of the field to preview the calculator's functions.
Short summary of the different calculators' functions:
- Basic: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division.
- Advanced: (in addition to the functions in basic), powers, squared numbers, square root, n-th root, pi.
- Scientific: (in addition to the functions in basic and advanced), sine, cosine and tangent, arcsine, arccosine and arctangent, degrees, Euler's number, and logarithms.
