This article is aimed at administrators, IT educators, and others responsible for Trelson, describing a name change for one of the security clients for Chromebooks.
The name change will take place in December 2024.
New Name: Trelson Browser Lockdown Extension
In December 2024, we will rename the security client Trelson Assessment Focus to Trelson Browser Lockdown Extension.
The purpose of this name change is to:
- Clearly separate the security clients from the activities that teachers create in Trelson, such as exams or teaching assignments.
- Prepare for the launch of a new way of working in Trelson to handle digital distractions more flexibly, using the concept of "Focus."
The name change is purely administrative and requires no reinstallation. The change will occur automatically and will not affect existing features.
What security clients can be used to lock down students' Chromebooks?
For students with Chromebooks, Trelson offers two different security clients, selected by the teacher when creating an assignment:
-
Kiosk App (for exams)
The Kiosk App is a specialized environment in ChromeOS that fully locks down the student's device. Only Trelson can be used, and access to other applications and operating system features is blocked. This ensures a secure exam environment and is recommended for all assessment tasks. -
Trelson Browser Lockdown Extension (primarily for teaching)
This is a Chrome extension that locks down the student's browser on the Chromebook. It restricts access to other websites and tools. It is best suited for teaching situations and can be used for exams requiring access to resources or specific extensions.
Note: This client does not fully lock down the student's device. For example, students can take screenshots and open apps installed via Google Play.
What do administrators need to do?
No technical actions are required.
However, it is important to communicate this change to teachers using Trelson:
- When creating an assignment in Trelson for students with Chromebooks, the security client will now appear as "Browser Lockdown Extension - Chromebook" instead of the previous name "Focus (ChromeOS)".
- Explain the differences between the Kiosk App and the Browser Lockdown Extension so that teachers can choose the correct security client based on the task's purpose.
Why is the Chrome extension used in teaching?
Trelson Browser Lockdown Extension provides more opportunities for teachers to integrate digital resources and extensions in the locked-down mode. For example, teachers can:
- Use digital educational resources such as Gleerups, ILT Education, NE.se, and Begreppa.
